Old Town’s Oldest French Restaurant with its Original Owners

Jean Francois was born in Beaugency, France in the Loire Valley. He came to the United States in 1976 and started working as a restaurant waiter. In September of 1983, he and his wife Francoise opened Le Refuge in Old Town Alexandria, across the street from Christ Church. As of September 2004 Le Refuge has been in business for 24 years! Their goal has always been to create a relaxing atmosphere, without waiting between courses. Casual attire is welcome; street parking is available.

Jean Francois explains that the food here is country French. You will find fresh produce. His chef of ten years, Jean Claude Lelan from La Rochelle in France, recommends you try the following:

Today Jean Francois' wife still helps in the kitchen. His daughter Anne Claire works as a waitress and may someday take over Le Refuge. This is an intimate space with lots of character, much like a small bistro in the middle of Paris. There is even a model of the Eiffel Tower. Even the wait staff has been here for many years. Customers return again and again because they like the ambience, and they know it is casual.
